The 1808 Congress of Erfurt saw Emperor Napoleon, the ruler of large parts of Europe, at the zenith of his power. To move his last great rival, Tsar Alexander of Russia, to a firm alliance, he summoned no less than 34 German monarchs and countless diplomats as supernumeraries. He also tried to impress the tsar and his German vassals with glamour and expensive theatre performances by the Comédie Française in front of a “parquet of kings” in the University Ball House. During the congress, Erfurt was at its “splendour peak” as a contemporary report of Kajetan Arnold elaborately noted. In the public conference of the historical society, two well-known Erfurt historians will present this outstanding event in the city’s history according to the latest studies. Dr. Horst Moritz will offer a general overview of the proceedings from September/October 1808, while Dr. Reiner Prass will focus on the meeting between Napoleon and Goethe along with the general cultural program. The event will be led by Dr. Steffen Raßloff.
